Spent the summer with my Mom and sister in S Africa. What can I say. A dollar goes a long way in the restaurants over there and the food is just too good... Back to daily food logging...

Edging down towards goal weight of 150... What is working? A combination of mountain biking and spending some time on the rowing machine every day. But mostly diet and watching the calories, who could have guessed. Having been walking around with an extra 25 to 30 pounds pretty much my entire life, it feels weird - and exciting - to see a leaner version of myself in the mirror.

Nice to be back in the 160's - it's been a while! And exciting. What is working? Mostly the whole food, plant based diet, for sure. Also limiting calories to around 1600 to 1800 per day - and no night snacking after meals! I finally found a way to control that: brush your teeth after dinner, floss and rinse with a mouthwash. That all indicates that your mouth is 'closed for business' for the remainder of the evening. I might have a cup of chamomile tea after that, but nothing solid. Also working? Regular exercise which currently consists of 1 hour mountain biking at average speed of 5 minutes per mile, 5,000 meters on the rowing machine (about 24 minutes), 15 minutes or so of boxing (heavy bag) and a late afternoon workout routine of about 40 minutes with weights, slam ball, squats, lunges and a couple of other exercises. Nothing on Fridays = rest day. Not running now due to plantar fasciitis but it is responding well to rest so I will be back running by next weekend.
My Monday morning health check produced a BP reading of 110/72, fasting glucose 108, heart rate 59, weight 168, Bodyfat percentage 22.8. I need to get better with using calipers to measure bodyfat percentage.

It actually said 169.4 on the scale this morning, but that was after an hour-long bike ride and 30 minutesrowing/ergometer... Nonetheless happy with wake-up weight of 171. Fasting blood sugar still a bit high at 113 - I will put that down to a high-carb dinner last night. Will need to get the weight down to around 160 and I am pretty sure the blood sugar number will come down as well. I've pretty much eliminated most processed foods from my diet but the sourdough bread is going to stay... :-)

Following a whole foods plant based diet and keeping careful track of calories, limit 1500 per day. Weight edging down. The temperatures here in Houston not conducive to (much) running but I have been substituting with the rowing machine and boxing - pounding a heavy hanging bag. I turned 70 the other day and have literally never felt better. It took me many years to figure out but personal experience and research findings are pretty conclusive: you have to pair good nutrition with regular, vigorous exercise (several times per week) which elevates your heart rate well beyond the resting rate. Of course there are lots of other things involved and everyone is different, but there's no denying this fact. Exercise AND diet. Not just one.
