Tachatna's Journal, 27 Jan 18

First, thank you for all of your encouragement everyone! What a wonderful thing to wake up to in the morning....encouragement, success stories...this is so uplifting! Weight loss can be such a daunting journey. Each of you has strengthened my resolve. Thank you!

My first day went very well. I caught a glimpse of how intricate my little "dance" to lose weight is going to be. I did NOT have to use short term insulin at all yesterday!!! (That has been my dinner time insulin for more than a year). That is total proof to me that getting off insulin is completely possible!

I take four kinds of diabetic meds...Lantus (long acting injection), Victoza (long acting insulin injection), Novolog (short acting injection at dinner time) and Metformin. It has done wonders for my A1C readings. The latest A1C was 6.1. However, I learned on the first day of my commitment to this journey that it is COMPLETELY POSSIBLE to keep that kind of result by diet and losing weight!

Don't misunderstand me. I have read account after account of being able to reverse the need for insulin by watching what you eat and loosing weight. I simply wanted what I thought was the easy way out. I love fruit! I love bread (rolls, donuts, cake, cookies!)! I love fruit juice (cranberry, orange)! I love pasta (spaghetti, lasagna)! I LOVE hamburgers and french fries! Rae222, you made me laugh at your comment "I would kill for a donut"...because that is my favorite thing! Even though I cut out those things in the beginning of my diabetic journey, I found that using insulin allowed me to add them back! It slowly became a crutch for me. I'm not exactly certain when it happened. I can see now HOW it happened and it is both embarrassing to admit and invigorating to be able to see the success of one day of change.

The balancing act of decreasing insulin as I lose weight is going to be a challenge. I even had to eat more than I anticipated yesterday (of healthy food) to keep my blood sugar from going too low! But, the journey starts with the first step and my first step (day) was great!! We'll see what today brings :) Have a great day everyone and thanks so much for all of your encouragement and comments!

That is some wonder news, Tachatna! It will become second nature and easier to deal with. George will attest to that, he couldnt get in the house one day. Someone locked the door I'm not saying who lol what happened was I was washing dishes and heard an unfamlar car pull up. Just then George went outside, I was flabagasted no pun intended when I saw him carrying a box of Domino pizza! Of all things, I let him back in when he finished! Then theres the crunching of potato chips, I've left the room on many occasions, but it doesnt bother me now. Continued success❤️

Congratulations! Always great when a 'everyday med' becomes more of an 'optional med'! It's daunting for all of us, but I keep seeing inspirational stories of people succeeding... it encourages me alot to see posts like this. I'm pre-diabetic with a family history of heart disease, and I refuse to let the weight win.

Hello. You might want to check out the glycemic index, which focuses on how food impacts blood sugar levels. The GI studies show that not all carbs are alike, i.e. there are good carbs versus bad carbs. I used the GI guidelines to help me lose 55 pounds, and I have kept it off for two years now. It is now a permanent part of my lifestyle. I eat pasta, bread, rice, but I make sure they are LOW GI varieties of those foods.
