So, here we are. I should back up, shouldn't I? I think I should back up.

I'll back up.

3 score years and ... okay, wrong document. 3 years ago, after a mere three years of abusing my body, I was admitted to the hospital where I learned I had alcoholic cirrhosis. Had I kept on drinking I would have been dead within 6 weeks; I presented with severe hepatitis and hepatic encephalopathy.

Now wait a minute. I was 39! My drinking? Three years! Cirrhosis only happens to older people who've spent years and years heavily drinking ... right? Ah, not so much. Through an odd quirk of nature and my own stupidity I'd managed to go from elevated LFTs (liver function tests) to actual cirrhosis in less time than it takes to do my taxes properly.

Okay, it was a bit longer than that. 3 years.

(Though I still hate doing my taxes. I'm a British ex-pat - we don't do our own taxes over there; rather you just assume you'll never ever see a tax refund because our government is very, very good at taking care of all that for us. Kind, they are. Yoda, I am not)

I went cold turkey in the hospital and as of this moment I'm a little over 2 years sober.

So, that's one part of the story.

Next chapter (which is actually the prequel - me and George Lucas are twins) is "St. Pancreas, you disappoint me".

The year before all of this happened, I was admitted with acute pancreatitis. Holy shit. It. Was. Excruciating. Dilaudid and I became good friends during the 7 day stay at the hospital, a blessing indeed. Got home, and switched from hard liquor to boxed wine which clearly helped a great deal. The damage I did to my poor pancreas had lasting effects I didn't really think about until I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes. Yay. I'm also hypothyroid. Double yay!

I had lost about 30 lbs, but it's crept up slowly. Now it's time to take care of business. My diabetes is well controlled, my liver is stable for the moment, so here we go!
