This post HCB is so true!!! I learned this back in the late 1980's!!! I exercised way more back then than I do now. I did not lose any significant weight until weight watchers and got my calorie intake down.

My current focus tells me proper sleep is very important. I can do all these thing properly in a day but 4 hours of crap sleep ruins everything. I'm 50 and still learning!

I can't understand why cardio gets such a bad wrap. I love it. getting your heart going a bit, builds stamina, gives a nice rush of adrenaline, releases endorphins, opens your lungs...yeah, sometimes it can be tedious, but doing cardio every day makes me feel better, even if it's low impact. I lost a TON of weight in the past just by walking every day at a good pace and keeping a good diet. 😁

Oh! I've wanted to go to an axe throwing bar ever since seeing Jason Momoa in pics at one. YUMMY!...I mean...it looked like fun. 😳🤤
We have one here I guess. I'm just clumsy enough to probably take off someone's head! 😲🤕

I don't like how so many charts minimize cardio compared to lifting. Cardio is great for your heart and should be at the same level as lifting! they're both good exercise! 😔 /rant
Have fun at axe throwing, hcb! that sounds super fun 😁

@Jenhoven if you love cardio, that’s really what matters! Walking is definitely great exercise. I think it gets a lot of push-back, however, because for so long it was touted as the only way to lose weight. Muscle has so many benefits, and for so long women were told if they lifted weights, they would look like Arnold, which just isn’t true! That’s my take on it🤷🏼♀️.

Lol low intensity cardio, like walking or a light jog combined with lifting is a great fat loss combo. Lifting builds/retain muscles that boost deficits/cardio/neat/rmr.
Are I just had a talk with my sister about that. She just started hitting the gym and she told me that some machines was not working her legs as good, I told her maybe you’re using too light of a weight and she told me that she didn’t want to go heavy cuz she doesn’t want to look bulky. I told her you wish you could build muscles that easily! I’m serious. Women be thinking that they could all be as big as these enhanced bodybuilder if they wanted to🤣

I did some axe throwing in a friend's backyard years ago. They were into the mountain man re-enactments thing. It was a hoot! You'll have a blast! 😃

@jenhoven -- although I know there are benefits to strength training, I definitely fall into the cardio camp. I figure the exercise I will actually DO is going to be best for me 😉

The discussion about cardio - the chart isn't giving up cardio! The chart is about "fat loss" - cardio is great for health, fitness and flexibility. It burns calories to create the deficit but doesn't actually help "fat loss" - weight training builds muscle tissue to replace the fat.

Good clarification, HCB. Thanks!

I think it's because when people think of cardio it's usually intense and can't be maintained long term compared to lifting. Plus lifting reduces the need to lose weight since you are building tissue that makes you way healthier and increasing your metabolism.

That's actually incorrect though. Cardio will burn fat quicker than lifting (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23019316/). I'm not saying lifting isn't important, but if your goal is to lose weight and fat, cardio is better. Lifting is great for changing your body composition and becoming leaner, but it takes longer to achieve it. And of course, doing both together would be optimal. 😉

It’s purely anecdotal, but I was an avid runner for 10 years (half-marathons), and I am way leaner now (BF % wise) than I ever was when I ran. Se la vie. I think what’s important is you find something you love and go for it.

Calorie deficit, drinking water and good sleep are the only ones to bother with😀👍
