Day 2 of recording food. I wanted to start recording food to monitor for certain if I was staying at 20-30 carbs/day, etc. and the way my brain works it messes up my natural eating and now I'm consumed with thoughts of what I'm eating and when. Going to try to ignore that mindset and eat like I was doing (which was so far successful) and just see where it falls in the fat/carb/protein % and especially the carb amount. I'm at the end of my 6th week and each week has been a transition to low-carb eating a la Gary Taubes excellent book Why We are Fat and What to Do About it.

Did you know you can set Fatsecret to track Net Carbs (total carbs minus fiber), instead of regular carbs? Since your body doesn't absorb fiber like it does other carbs, this is a more accurate way of lookiing at your carb intake. You can change your settings by going to your "Enter Food" page and clicking on "Edit Preferences" just below the nutritional totals at the top of the columns. Then scroll to the bottom of the page, check Net Carbs and uncheck Carbs. You can pick up to 6 nutritients to track - I do Calories, Protein, Fat, Sodium and Net Carbs.

I did find that! At first I was freaking thinking how am I eating this many carbs but then found that feature! Why do u do sodium? What do u look at w sodium to stay under or reach a certain amt daily?

I noticed on my page here it shows carbs and on the calorie. Counter app it shows carbs but when I pull up my days food page it does show the net carbs.

Yeah, the phone app only shows carbs, not net carbs, which is annoying. I don't really plan my sodium intake, but if I notice a sudden weight gain overnight I can look at the sodium to see if that explains it due to water retention. I think between 1500mg and 3000mg a day is pretty typical for me. I don't count the salt I put on food (and I salt almost everything), I only count what's in the food already. A dash of table salt here and there is nothing compared to what's in processed foods like sausage, cheese, canned soup and pork rinds - those can really throw me off. Actually, I just looked back at my sodium intake and saw that on 4/1 it was really high - 4802 - and lo and behold, my weight bounced up 2 pounds for the next couple days before dropping back down again. Guess it actually does make a difference!

I have the IPhone app, and it shows my Net Carbs. Maybe yours hasn't synced or something?

I just realized it doesn't show it for each individual item, but it does show total day and each section: breakfast/lunch/dinner/snacks, so you can just kind of add it up as you enter it (and, of course, still see how it affects your daily total). I was jealous of my husband's IPhone 4 because it had video. So when my old IPhone battery recently died, I had to get a 4. Darn. :)

So it shows total net carbs for u on phone app? And I'm totally with ya on the necessary iPhone purchase!
