I ate an Atkins Peanut Butter Granola Bar for lunch and when I recorded it in FatSecret was shocked to see that it showed up as 18 carbs. I have the box in front of me and it says there are only 2.9 Net Carbs/bar. When I tried to re-enter it as a new food, I discovered that there is no place to put "Sugar Alcohols" which I thought were supposed to be subtracted from the total carbs along with the "dietary fiber". However, there is no place in the Nutritional Facts to list "Sugar Alcohols". WHY NOT? This food entry makes my food sheet look bad because it doesn't subtract the 11 sugar alcohols that are in the bar.

Someone said that I wasn't following the Atkins diet, but I believe I'm following it a lot more than they think. If they had read NANY they would have read on page 17 that the "Sugar Alcohols are not fully absorbed by the gut" and on page 16 it specifically says "When it comes to low-carb foods, you subtract grams of sugar alcohols (including glycerin), as well as of fiber, from total grams of carbs to get the Net Carb count."

So, my question is.....why isn't there a place in the Nutrition Facts in FatSecret for Sugar Alcohols? I want to get an accurate reading of my Net Carbs, and without a place to list the sugar alcohols, I'm not getting a correct reading. Can't Fatsecret change that Nutrition Facts List and make a place to record the Sugar Alcohols? Either that or Atkins needs to change the information on the box for these Peanut Butter Granola Bars. I would have never bought the darned things if I had known they had that many carbs in them. Now I'm stuck with a box of these delicious things with high carbs that are staring me in the face. No wonder I can't lose weight!

I don't think there is a way to list sugar alcohols but if you change your settings to have it list how many net carbs you have eaten. Normally this will show up accurately.

I have it set up to show me Net Carbs and it still shows 13 Net Carbs, but on the Atkins box itself, it says it only has 2.9g of Net Carbs. WHO'S RIGHT??

IN YOUR RECORDINGS (THINGS YOU WANT TO WATCH IE.. CALS, FAT CARBS...ETC) CHECK OFF THE NET CARBS BUTTON THIS ONE WILL REDUCE THE SUGAR ALCH. FROM THE CARB COUNT... SEE IF THAT GIVES YOU WHAT YOU WANT :)

If you go to the website under lessons, the first lesson tells you that net carbs are total carbs minus fiber. There's no mentin of deducting sugar alocohols. Do you have the older version of the diet? I copied this from the site: What Are Net Carbs? When you do Atkins, you count Net Carbs, aka Digestible carbs or nonimpact carbs. To calculate, simply subtract the number of grams of dietary fiber in whole foods from the total number of carbohydrate grams. Let's do the math. A halfcup of steamed green beans contains 4.9 grams of carbs, of which 2.0 grams are fiber, so the Net Carb count is 2.9 grams. A half‐cup of Romaine Lettuce contains 0.7 grams of carbs, of which 0.5 grams are fiber, for a Net Carb count of 0.2 grams. No wonder you can eat lots and lots of salad greens on Atkins! To keep on track, use a pocketsized carb gram counter or our online version. For most packaged foods, you'll have to read the Nutrition Facts Panel to find the carb count. Simply subtract fiber grams from total carbohydrate grams to calculate Net Carbs.

I have my settings on net carbs and it shows me there's 13g net carbs in a bar, which makes sense. Your body will still metabolize sugar alcohols, they just result in a lower blood glucose and thus, insulin spike than sugar.

I've read the book New Atkins for a New You, commonly referred to as NANY by Atkins dieters and on page 16 of that book it states that sugar alcohols and dietary fiber are deducted from the total carbs. So according to the Atkins Peanut Butter Granola Bar box which I just purchased, on the front of the box it explicitely states 2.9 carbs. If you check the back of the box in the lower right hand corner it says "ATKINS NET CARB COUNT ASSIST YOU IN TRACKING CARBS THAT IMPACT BLOOD SUGAR. FIBER AND SUGAR ALCOHOLS SHOULD BE SUBTRACTED FROM TOTAL CARBS SINCE THEY MINIMALLY IMPACT BLOOD SUGAR." Since this is an Atkins product, I don't think that they're wrong. I've tried to list a new food into the Fatsecret food list but when it came to the Nutrition List, there is absolutely NO PLACE to list the sugar alcohols WHICH DOES CHANGE THE TOTAL NET CARBS. So, either Fatsecret needs to include a line for sugar alcohols in their nutrition facts or someone needs to contact Atkins and tell them that they made a mistake on their packaging of this product.

You are right, Ready4camping. Sugar alcohols are supposed to be deducted from total carbs. I've read it as well. And if the Atkins box says it only has 2.9 carbs, they must be deducting the sugar alcohols. You're right that there's no way to input the sugar alcohols into FatSecret so that they can be deducted from the total carbs. I suggest creating your own entry (not shared with the public) in which you input the fiber count from the box and change the total carbs so that the net carbs will equal 2.9. I know it's not accurate by what the box says, but it will allow you to accurately track your net carbs for Atkins products that have sugar alcohols.

As a carbohydrate that can be metabolised, they MUST be on the label as a net carb. You CAN derive energy from a sugar alcohol. The only reason the Atkins diet (along with diabetes friendly diets) allow them is that they don't spike blood insulin levels. From a USDA/total nutrition/caloric intake point of view, they absolutely do count as a net carb. But if you want to work out the net carbs that will result in an insulin spike, you can deduct them, along with dietary fiber, from the total carbohydrates available in the food product.

Your right, Im on the Atkins and my carbs look off the hook as well because of the sugar alcohols. Maybe we should email them for the addition of sugar alcohols.

I sent a request to the administrators for Sugar Alcohols deduction line item over a year ago. They said it was already on their list of to-do but there were many site corrections ahead of it. :( I agree with ChristyLA. Create your private food item (don't share-others can change it) and just take the sugar alcohols out of the total carb count.

Hi Can one have peanut butter (Skippy smooth) on Atkins induction phase?

No, Mishyu. Nut butters aren't allowed until after the first 2 weeks. The best kind of name-brand peanut butter is Peter Pan. It has only 3 net carbs; all the others have 4 or more net carbs :)
