I was away for the weekend and I was trying to convince my future mother-in-law that this website is awesome when it comes to wanting to lose weight. she's overweight and needs to lose weight for her knee surgery and she says she wants to lose weight but then she eats 2 servings and dinner, cake, and buys cookies for a snack. I dont know what else I can say to her to convince her that she needs to change her habits in order to lose weight since everything i've said so far has just gone in one ear and out the other. and she even asks me for advice and i feel like i shouldn't bother anymore since she doesnt take the advice. any suggestions?

I think the best advice you can give her is, "You have to decide you want to change. Once you decide to make that change, you'll do something about it." And leave it at that. Don't waste your energy, but be nice about it. And those words are true. It isn't for you to decide. She has to decide. And apparently she hasn't decided yet.

I agree with Paige. I know I kept saying "I want to lose weight, I need to lose weight"...but I had every excuse in the book not to lift a finger...then one day, I literally ran out of excuses. My boyfriend said "just shut up and do it, I don't want to hear another word about your weight unless you are actually DOING something". He was right. All talk, no action, so shortly after that I started really trying to lose weight. I enjoy my cheats, but overall once I decided on my course of action it turned out to be pretty easy...of course this website has been a huge help. Even though I knew I wasn't alone, i still felt that way

I agree with Paige. You migth even say WHEN you make that decision come back to me and I will help you all I can or something like that so it does not sound like you are shutting her down/out.

Paige is right. I have a friend who asks my advice but then doesn't follow it. Don't get frustrated, just repeat what you said before, be a good example. Lead by example and one day she will decide. Just let her know you are available to help her when she is ready to take the steps.
