Sorry I haven't been here in a while. Had surgery Friday and it did not go well. My arm (with the dialysis access) has been hurting for a while. Hurt to bend it or extend. When I went on Friday to dialysis I finally spoke up as it looked swollen. The nurses listened to it and could not hear a flow, so I was sent to emergency procedure at the vascular center. Apparently huge clotting where the swelling was. So I had 4 shots of APT (given to heart patients with clots) and had to wait for it to work. It wasn't one of my "normal" surgeons as neither was there that day. I had to listen to him say "Gee, I hope I got it into her access and didn't miss". Didn't inspire confidence.
So, an hour later I was in for the fistulaplasty (an angioplasty balloon for the arm). I don't think I was given enough "juice" as I remember everything he said...like "Glad to see I didn't miss and got it in there. Looks like now this will go good."
He went in in two places and I ended up with stitches.
Sooooo….I had to go to dialysis Saturday. They took one look at the stitches and said they were too fresh to remove. Tried to stick me FOUR times. Twice they pulled the needle with a clot at the end of it. The fourth time I almost jumped out of the chair it hurt so bad. They sent me home without dialysis and we're going to try again tomorrow.
IF IT DOESN'T work tomorrow, then I go straight to the hospital. My arm is purple and very sore. I am so scared to get "stuck" tomorrow at dialysis, but more scared that I'll have to go to the hospital.
I haven't worked out since last Wednesday. I've been logging on here, but little else (sorry). When I do work out again, no resistance bands/belt where I hold my leg with a belt and my arm for awhile and I won't be trying modified planking.
On the good side...Saturday took Binky-puppy to have pictures with Santa. Don't have them yet. Afterward, we took her to a new doggie park. She was so excited and ran around. When we came home she curled up and slept forever!
Sorry for the novel! Take care! Onward friends! Binky

Update: Wrote down every nurse that helped me Saturday and today and requested that a note be put in their files (5 nurses). They were overwhelmingly careful and gentle the entire time. I want commendations in their files! WE MADE IT TODAY! My arm is black and purple, and hurts...but
I'm glad I had dialysis today! Praying a Rosary of thanksgiving (crying right now) for my nurses AND for all of your support!

I am so sorry to hear of the blood clot in your arm. I have a problem with blood clots also and I know from experience that a poor sticker can cause you a lot of pain. I had a woman that was spastic and when she drew blood she didn't stick, she jabbed. I complained and I am sure others did also and they got rid of her. I felt bad because she did have a handicap, but she shouldn't have been drawing blood.

Thanks diehard3. I'm sorry you have had a tough time of it too in the past. Nursing is an art...not everyone can do it! I've never had a nurse with an actual problem like that, but one has problems sticking me. I just ask "can so and so come over and help?" I really like her as a person but she doesn't ever seem to get the right angle. After asking for help a couple of times they just don't put me with her anymore. Hope the clotting situation is better with you now.

Blinky, I hope things go well and it's one and done kinda thing from now on. I do not like the hospital either! Don't worry about your exercise. Worry about you my friend and relax as much as you can so you heal. Love & hugs to you and Blinky You'll be in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you diana1096...I have to have fistulaplasties fairly often (every couple of months), but the rest of the ordeal I had last week is unusual. You are right...hope it isn't happening again! XOXO
